For years, Search Console told you exactly one story: how your site performed in traditional blue-link search. That story just split in two. As of August 2026, Google has rolled out a dedicated AI Overviews Search Console report — officially called the Generative AI performance report — giving every website owner, for the first time, first-party visibility into how their pages show up inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI-powered Discover.
If you’ve been wondering whether your AI search visibility work is actually doing anything, this is the first real answer Google has given you. Here’s what the report shows, what it still doesn’t, and how to actually use it.
In June 2026, Google introduced Search Generative AI performance reports as a new, dedicated view inside the existing Performance section of Search Console, separate from your regular Search and Discover reports. Google confirmed on August 31, 2026 that the rollout is now complete — every website worldwide has access, following a staggered rollout that began with a limited subset of properties in June.
Alongside the reporting, Google also introduced a new toggle letting site owners choose whether their content can appear in and help ground responses in generative AI Search features like AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover. Sites that opt out simply stop receiving traffic and impressions from those specific surfaces — it has no bearing on ranking in traditional search results.
The Generative AI performance report tracks impressions — how many times a link to your site appeared inside an AI-generated answer — broken down across a few useful dimensions:
This data sits alongside your regular Search performance numbers rather than replacing them — Google has been clear that these impressions were already technically part of your overall organic performance; they’re just now broken out and made visible on their own, dedicated view for the first time.
Two things are conspicuously missing, and worth setting expectations around if you’re presenting this to a client or your own team:
Google has acknowledged both gaps are on the radar as the reports mature, and there’s real regulatory pressure pushing that timeline along: the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has set Google a deadline of March 2027 to introduce page-level (rather than just property-level) opt-out controls, and the regulator has also explicitly signaled it expects click-through data to be added — though neither has landed yet as of this report’s launch.
For the past two years, agencies and marketers doing GEO/AEO work have faced the same frustrating problem: you can build for AI visibility, but you’ve had no first-party way to prove it’s working. Third-party AI visibility tools have filled some of that gap, but they’re estimates, not ground truth from the platform itself.
This report closes that gap, at least partially. For the first time, you can point to a Google-native number and say: “here’s how many times your page was actually surfaced inside an AI Overview last month, and here’s the trend since we started this work.” That’s a meaningfully different conversation than the modeled estimates AI-visibility tracking tools have been offering.
It’s also a strong signal about where SEO reporting is heading generally. AI impression tracking is likely to become a standard line item in monthly SEO reports over the next year or two, the same way Core Web Vitals or keyword ranking tables became standard a few years back.
1. Identify your top AI-visible pages. Sort the Pages dimension by impressions and see which content is already earning AI citations. These pages are giving Google’s models something they clearly find useful and citable — study what they have in common (structure, clarity, specificity) and replicate that pattern elsewhere on your site.
2. Find the gap between AI impressions and traditional impressions. A page that ranks well in traditional search but shows almost no generative AI impressions may be structured in a way that’s less “extractable” for AI summarization — often a sign it needs clearer headings, more direct answers near the top, or better structured data.
3. Track the trend after content changes. Because the report includes date-range filtering, you can treat it like a lightweight before/after test. Restructure a page for clearer AI extractability, then watch whether its AI impression share moves over the following weeks.
4. Cross-reference with GA4. Since the report doesn’t include click data yet, pairing Search Console’s AI impression trends with GA4 referral traffic patterns (watching for AI-platform referrer patterns and shifts in landing-page traffic on long-tail, informational URLs) is currently the closest workaround to estimating actual AI-driven traffic impact.
5. Don’t panic if it’s not showing data yet. Google has noted that, like the Discover and News reports, this report only populates when there’s sufficient data volume for a given property. A smaller site may see little to nothing here for a while, which isn’t itself a red flag.
Expect this report to grow, not stay static. Given the regulatory pressure for click data and page-level controls, and Google’s own acknowledgment that it plans to add metrics over time, the honest expectation is that this is version one of what will likely become a much richer reporting suite — closer in depth to the traditional Performance report than it currently is.
For businesses and marketers already investing in AI search visibility — clean listings, structured data, strong third-party mentions, consistent brand presentation — this report is the first tool that lets you actually measure whether that work is showing up where it matters. That alone makes it worth checking regularly, even in its current, impressions-only form.
If you haven’t checked your own Search Console property for this report yet, that’s the easiest next step — even a few minutes with the Pages dimension will tell you more about your AI search visibility than any third-party tool’s estimate.
