How to Get Your Brand Cited in Google AI Overviews: 8 AEO Steps That Work in 2026

Quick answer To get cited in Google AI Overviews, answer the exact questions your buyers ask in the first one or two sentences of a page, back the answer with specific expertise only your business has, structure the page with clear headings, lists, and FAQ schema, and build a cluster of connected pages around the topic. AI Overviews pick sources that are clear, factual, well-structured, and already trusted by Google, not the brands with the biggest ad budgets.

Search has quietly changed shape. For a growing share of queries, the first thing a buyer reads is no longer a list of ten blue links. It is a paragraph written by AI, built from a handful of sources that Google decided to trust.

If your website is one of those sources, your words become the answer. If it is not, you are competing for the clicks that are left. This guide explains how answer engine optimisation (AEO) works, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and the exact steps we used to get a mid-sized Indian manufacturer quoted above Amazon in Google’s AI Overview.

What is a Google AI Overview, and why does being cited matter?

A Google AI Overview is the AI-generated summary that appears at the top of many search results. It answers the query directly and shows small source links and source cards next to the claims it makes.

Being cited matters for three reasons:

  • You are seen first. The Overview sits above organic results and often above product listings.
  • You borrow Google’s credibility. When the AI explains a topic in your words, buyers treat you as the expert.
  • Clicks are warmer. People who click a cited source have already read your thinking and arrive closer to a decision.

The same logic now applies to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot. Each one reads the web, chooses sources, and summarises them. Getting chosen is the new page one.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is the difference?

These three terms overlap, and you need all three. Here is the simplest way to separate them:

What winsRelevance, links, technical healthClear, direct, well-structured answersConsistent brand facts, authority and mentions across the web

SEO makes your content eligible. AEO makes it the passage the AI lifts. GEO makes sure AI assistants know who you are and describe you accurately. Treat them as one strategy, not three projects.

A real example: how a latex manufacturer beat Amazon in Google’s AI answer

GeoFoam has made natural latex mattresses, pillows and cushions in Ahmedabad since 1975. When it came to Atlas SoftWeb, its old website had no SEO work behind it and no meaningful search visibility. The search results for its products were dominated by Amazon, IndiaMART, and heavily advertised mattress brands such as Wakefit, Kurlon, and Duroflex.

We designed and developed a new website from scratch and built SEO and AEO into every page. By October 2026, Google’s AI Overview was quoting GeoFoam for two of the most competitive searches in its category:

  • “latex cushion for sofa”: the opening definition and two of the three key benefits are cited to geofoam.in, and GeoFoam holds the first source card, above Foams India and Amazon.
  • “latex rubber mattress”: the definition plus the spine support and cool sleep benefits are cited to geofoam.in, and GeoFoam’s buying guide is the first source card, above IndiaMART and Dreamzee.

GeoFoam did not outspend anyone. It out-explained them. The full story is in our GeoFoam case study. Below are the steps behind it, written so you can apply them to your own site.

8 steps to get your content cited in AI Overviews

1. Start from questions, not keywords

List the questions buyers type before they buy. For GeoFoam, these were questions such as “what is a latex mattress”, “is latex better than memory foam” and “does latex sleep hot”. Use Google’s People Also Ask boxes, your sales team’s most common enquiries, and your customer support inbox. Each question becomes a heading on a page.

2. Answer in the first 40 to 60 words

Put a plain, complete answer directly under each question. Define the thing, then say why it matters. AI systems prefer a sentence they can lift without editing. Google’s Overview for “latex rubber mattress” mirrors GeoFoam’s own pattern exactly: a one-line definition, then “Key Benefits”.

3. Add specifics only you can give

Generic claims such as “high quality” and “best in class” are ignored. Specific, verifiable detail gets cited. GeoFoam’s pages explain how pinhole and pin-core manufacturing lets air circulate, and why medium-firm latex keeps the spine straight. That first-hand manufacturing knowledge is precisely what the AI quoted.

4. Structure every page for scanning

  • One H1, then logical H2 and H3 headings phrased as questions
  • Short paragraphs, bullet lists for benefits, and tables for comparisons
  • A short FAQ section at the end of key pages
  • Descriptive titles such as “Latex Rubber Mattress Guides & Buying Tips” rather than vague ones such as “Our Range”

5. Add schema markup

Structured data tells machines what each part of the page means. Use Organization and LocalBusiness on your home and contact pages, Product on product pages, Article or BlogPosting on guides, and FAQPage on question-and-answer sections. Test every page in Google’s Rich Results Test.

6. Build a topic cluster, not a single page

One great page rarely wins on its own. Build a hub page for the category, then supporting guides, comparisons, and product pages that link to each other. Depth across a topic tells Google and AI tools that you are the specialist, not a passing seller.

7. Keep the technical foundations clean

AI Overviews draw on pages Google already indexes and trusts. Fast load times, mobile-friendly design, clean URLs, an XML sitemap, correct canonical tags, and no crawl errors are the entry ticket. This is why we prefer to build SEO into a website at the design and development stage rather than patching it in later.

8. Strengthen your brand’s entity signals (GEO)

Generative AI tools also need to know who you are. Keep your business name, address, phone number, and core facts identical everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, directories, LinkedIn, and review sites. Add a detailed About page, named authors with real credentials, and genuine customer reviews. Consistency is what lets ChatGPT or Perplexity describe your business correctly.

Common mistakes that keep brands out of AI answers

  • Burying the answer. Three paragraphs of brand story before the actual answer means the AI quotes someone else.
  • Writing for keywords instead of people. Stuffed, repetitive copy reads as low quality to both humans and machines.
  • Thin product pages. A photo, a price, and two lines of text give the AI nothing to cite.
  • Conflicting facts. Different founding years, service lists, or addresses across the web reduce trust.
  • Publishing once and stopping. Topical authority comes from steady, connected publishing over months.

How to check whether your brand appears in AI answers today

  1. Write down 15 to 20 questions your buyers ask before they contact you.
  2. Search each one on Google and note whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it cites.
  3. Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and note which brands are named.
  4. Mark where competitors appear, and you do not. Those gaps are your content plan.
  5. Repeat monthly. AI answers change as new content is published.

If you would rather have this done for you, an AI search audit from Atlas SoftWeb covers all four platforms and turns the gaps into a prioritised action plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of writing and structuring web content so that AI-powered search tools, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, select it and cite it as the answer to a user’s question.

Can you pay to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Citations in AI Overviews are earned through content quality, structure, and authority. Paid ads may appear near the Overview, but they do not place your content inside the answer.

How long does AEO take to show results?

It depends on your site’s technical health, competition, and existing content. Most businesses see early movement within a few months of consistent answer-first publishing and technical fixes, and authority keeps building after that.

Do I still need SEO if I focus on AEO?

Yes. AI Overviews draw mainly on pages Google already ranks and trusts, so SEO is the foundation. AEO is what makes your content the specific passage the AI chooses to quote.

Can a small business beat big brands in AI answers?

Yes. GeoFoam, a specialist manufacturer, is cited above Amazon, IndiaMART, and national mattress brands. AI systems reward clear, expert answers more than company size or ad spend.

Does AEO work for B2B, education and service businesses?

Yes. Any business whose customers research online before they buy can benefit, including B2B suppliers, SaaS, healthcare, colleges and universities, real estate and professional services.
